Lesson 1.3 introduces students to the theme of America in the World. Students investigate the question, "Why Did Christopher Columbus and other Europeans Explore the Americas?" Students review the motives for exploration and analyze a 16th century image of Columbus' arrival in the Americas, analyzing how the point of view and historical situation influence how we interpret the image. Students also read a primary source by Christopher Columbus and analyze how his purpose influenced what he included and omitted from the source.
